Wimbledondistrict of South London, Old English Wunemannedune (10c.), probably "Wynnman\\'s hill," from proper name *Wynnman. The -m- is intrusive; the -n- to -l- substitution was common in Anglo-French. Used metonymically from 1895 for the lawn tennis championships played annually there.
