apothegm (n.)"pithy saying," 1550s, from Greek apophthegma "terse, pointed saying," literally "something clearly spoken," from apophthengesthai "to speak one\\'s opinion plainly," from apo- "from" (see apo-) + phthengesthai "to utter."
